What Is a Service Dog (Animal)?

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 1990), a dog is considered a "service dog" if it has been "individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability." Also according to the ADA, a 'disability' is a "mental or physical condition which substantially limits a major life activity" such as:

•  caring for one's self
•  performing manual tasks
•  walking
•  seeing
•  hearing
•  speaking
•  breathing
•  learning
•  working
•  as well as some disabilities that may not be visible,
such as: deafness epilepsy psychiatric conditions

To be considered a service dog/animal, the dog/animal must be trained to perform tasks directly related to the person's disability.

Saint Simon is a Delta Society Therapy dog and Service dog in training.  We are a team and we are working with Animals Deserve Better to support Special Education in our Community.  Help us today and donate to our cause.  Click our photo for more information.

VALDEZ - he was taken to a local high kill shelter after being found along with 2 other dogs and 3 cats next to their dead owner.  All the animals were in terrible shape, it was obvious that their owner had not been able to take care of them in a long time.  We took Valdez straight to our vets as he needed immediate attention. After initial exams we had to take him to our Doggie dentist - Valdez was found to have only 25 of his teeth still remaining and of those only 1 could be saved - we had them all removed.  Valdez also was diagnosed with a heart murmur.  Valdez is now a healthy 4.4 pounds long hair chi of 6 years and we are going to try and give him many more.
